Before constructing your city, use the data maps to locate the [[commodities|resource]] deposits, water aquifer and [[wind]] direction of your site. You can access various data maps through the tab at the bottom right side of your screen.
[[File:water data map.png]]The water data map button reveals the city's water table. The darker blue an area is the more water is contains.
[[File:coal data map.png]]The coal, ore and oil data map buttons reveal the city's underground deposits. The darker an area is the more resource it contains.
*If you want to mine [[ore]]s or drill [[oil]], avoid constructing buildings on top of deposits. [[Coal Mine|Mines]] and [[Oil Well|wells]] also produce pollution and lower the land value of nearby areas. Be sure to keep high wealth residential zones away from these dirty locations.
[[File:wind data map.png]]The wind data map shows the blue arrows that indicate the direction of the wind blowing over your city.
*[[Air Pollution|Air pollution]] is an important source of [[happiness|unhappiness]] for your Sims. Air pollution follows the direction of the wind through the city. Be sure to construct [[Coal Power Plant|coal]] and [Oil Power Plant|oil power plant]]s and level 1 tech industrial buildings at the edge of your city, in the direction of the blue arrows.
